Written just after songs from the early house came out. I performed it a lot live and worked out a version with Rob and Jen as a trio. It didn't seem to fit on "How to leave a room" or maybe it had outlived it's time. I still like it though and I was glad to revisit it.
lyrics
Well the towns on the banks of the river
have fallen to disrepair
and on the bridge that separates this city I could swear
that i saw you standing there
and oh you had fire
oh you had fire in your eyes
I could hide this year's murders
under the acres of snow
and were it not for the sun that comes in spring
none of you would ever even know
That once they had fire
oh they had fire in your eyes
But I am the bed
you'll never sleep in sober
a word too far away from the tip of your tongue
so pass that here
pas that here while we're young
I'm taking back from the gamblers
all their magic cards and dice
give them back the edge that they lost the first time
they ever took my advice
And I'll put back fire
I'll put back fire in their eyes
and this one goes to the widow
who's glad to fianlly be alone
relishing all the silence that comes
from a house of singing bones
but once she had fire
oh she had fire in her eyes
But I am the bed
you'll never sleep in sober
a word too far away from the tip of your tongue
so pass that here
pas that here while we're young
and I was your wasted son
crawling so far behind you
